Style Watch: Blow-drying Your Hair
June 17, 2004 — Using a brush and blow dryer to create a great-looking
hairstyle looks so easy in the salon. But try it at home and it doesn't
always turn out so well. David Kafer, co-owner and master stylist of RED
7
SALON in Chicago, has tips on how to blow dry and style both curly
and
straight hair.
Blow-Dry Curly to Straight
1) PRODUCT: Add straightening balm and a leave-in conditioning product to
hair and comb through
2) PRE-DRY: Roughly dry hair to 50% moisture with dryer
3) SECTION: Horizontally section off hair 1-inch at a time beginning with
back of head and moving forward
4) WRAP: Flat wrap each 1-inch section with your brush to ensure tight
tension WARNING: Do not move to next section unless previous one has been
completely dried or curl will come back!
5) PRODUCT: Add spray shine for natural gloss finish
Blow-Dry Curly to Creative Curly
1) PRODUCT: Add curl enhancing product and a leave-in conditioning product
to hair and "scrunch through"
2) SECTION: Horizontally section off hair 1-inch at a time beginning with
back of head and moving forward
3) TWIST: With each section tightly wind curls around fingers. WARNING: Do
not move to next section unless previous one has been completed or curl will
not be defined!
4) DIFFUSE: Attach a diffuser to the end of your dryer and place on a low
setting tilting your head so that the curls fall into the diffuser basket.
TIP: The less you touch the hair at this point the better the curl will be.
5) RAKE: When hair is almost dry, lightly rake your fingers through and
finish with a shine spray product.
